Previously I have written about being personally drawn to all natural products that have limited ingredients. Now I wanted to share what makes our apothecary soaps special, because - let's face it - there are a lot of great soaps being made out there! Some are really beautiful with vivid colors (these are usually made with synthetic micas which is why you won't see them at Root) and others even look like cupcakes! Yum!
So what makes Root Apothecary soaps different? First, many of our soaps are made with herbal infusions, and that makes them literally "apothecary" soaps. As a licensed herbalist and practitioner of Chinese medicine, I love herbs. I love the medicinal power and simple beauty of herbs, and I have prescribed them to my patients with great success. So it was an easy and joyful task to add them to my soap making recipes. Here are some examples:
- Rosebud Double Butter soap has the herb "mei gui hua" (rosebud) which is used in Chinese medicine to "regulate Qi."
- Vegan Citrus & Rose soap was made with herbally infused oils, including mei gui hua and the herb "chen pi" or dried orange peel. Chen pi also "regulates Qi."
- Peppermint Shea Butter & Enjoy Mint soaps both contain dried peppermint, known as "Bo He" in Chinese.
Additionally, other soaps reflect and honor the beauty of plants that are used as herbs in Chinese medicine. One example is our Magnolia Butter soap. Magnolia Flower is called "xin yi hua" in Chinese medicine. It is one of my favorite flowers too!
Of course, you don't have to have any interest in herbal medicine in order to enjoy our apothecary soaps. But for those who enjoy knowing a little bit of the maker's influences, please read the descriptions of our products, and enjoy!
